That being said, he was an extremely aggressive commander who managed to establish a rapport with his troops - for that reason, and the importance of the war against the Nazis, he was tolerated until the end of the war, at which point his bizarre and fascist-adjacent statements got him shuffled off to a less relevant position, and he died in a car accident shortly thereafter.
