I highly doubt the Spaniards’ technological gap was enough to be that dominant. For comparison, Zulu forces armed predominantly with spears and shields beat a British force that was over twice as large as Cortes’s initial force and armed with much more reliable and higher rate of fire breach loading rifles.

Ups, you’re right, the book is “Fifth Sun: A New History of the Aztecs” by Camilla Townsend. I wrote the title from memory and got it wrong.
