Both the French Revolutionary governments and Napoleon’s Empire modeled themselves after Ancient Rome. Greek and Latin were extremely commonly learned languages in Britain for a country that had little business with Greece or a dead language. Writers from Byron to Shelley to Wilde to the poets of the trenches in WW1 freely made historical and mythological references intended for their readers that would miss most modern audiences who aren’t immersed in the Classics as a keystone of their society’s culture.
